It is a nenbutsu dance performed in the gardens of houses and town squares during the first Bon festival to commemorate the spirits of the New Bon Festival, and is a local performing art that is said to have started in the early Edo period.
The dancers wear shagoma on their heads, dance around in navy blue happi coats and gauntlet-legged ties, and during the festival, the whole town dances enthusiastically.
Although it was once on the verge of being lost, this festival is still being cherished and passed down through the hands of local young people.
It was designated as an intangible folk cultural property by the prefecture on March 31, 1973 (S48).
