Kunisaki Knot New Year (Nationally Designated Cultural Property) Kuzakino Knot Shongatsu

Date: Wednesday, January 17, 2024

This is an unusual event in which the New Year's god is sent off on a straw boat to pray for family safety, safety at sea, and a bountiful catch, and is performed by women.
One woman from each family comes to the beach, makes offerings to the sea and prays, then lights a straw boat and sets it afloat.
This event, in which ``nail tags'' with words written to ward off evil spirits are placed on the beach and prayers are made with offerings of red bean rice and sacred sake, is said to mark the end of the local New Year.
On March 9, 2011 (H23), it was designated as an intangible folk cultural property that requires measures such as the creation of national records.
