Explaining the three attractions you should know about when climbing Mt. Tengukura! We will also introduce recommended spots
掲載日:2022.09.06
Perhaps one of the most well-known mountains in southern Mie is Mt. Tengukura in OwaseCity. Whether you've climbed the mountain before or not, why not reaffirm the charm of this mountain, whether you've climbed it before or not, with the view from the top and the mountain trail where you can feel the purple green leaves?
*Shikansuiha is a four-character idiom that describes the fresh, lush, and beautiful appearance of the trees in the mountains.
- [Things to keep in mind when climbing]
- Climbing involves dealing with nature, so there is a good chance that uncertainties and unexpected situations may occur. Be sure to prepare well, plan well, and have fun.

Introducing the three charms of Tengukurayama
Even in OwaseCity, which is surrounded by mountains, Tengukurayama is easy to distinguish due to its massive appearance, and its long ridge extending from east to west makes you want to traverse it.
TAKAI'm confident that I can answer the question, "Which one is Tengu Kurayama?" (lol)
Here I would like to introduce three of the charms of Mt. Tengukura, which is loved by local residents and is often climbed by elementary schools in OwaseCity on field trips.
1. Rocky area at the top of Mt. Tengukura
2. Great panorama from Ochobo Rock
3. Kumano Kodo Iseji, a world heritage mountain trail
Let's take a look at each!
Attraction 1: Rocky area at the top of Mt. Tengukura
The biggest attraction of Mt. Tengukura is the large rock that stands at the top!
This mountain was once a popular place for people known as Shugendo, who practiced training in the mountains.
Perhaps they used this large rock as a place for training to strengthen their mind and body.
Near the top, there are stone monuments and shrines dedicated to En no Gyoja, the founder of Shugendo, and you can get a glimpse of the mountain worship that continues today.
- A little bit of trivia
- A statue of the couple who are said to have taken care of Ennogyo is also enshrined next to Engyosha. It is said that the couple were actually demons, but they became humans by training with Engyoja. When you talk about demons, you may have an image of them as scary beings or evil people, but demons are originally people of the mountains, and they are objects of worship. Gokijo, a monk who is also a descendant of a demon, says that he may have played a role.
TAKAI'm surprised that there are descendants of demons!
Attraction 2: Great panorama from Ochobo Rock
If you follow the ridge that continues east from Mt. Tengukura, you will arrive at the second attraction, ``Ochobo Rock''.
The view from the top of Mt. Tengukura is spectacular, but the panoramic view of Owase Bay, Lake Shiroishi, and Kumano Sea from Ochobo Rock is a spectacular view that will make you want to cheer, so we recommend it!
- Points to note
- It takes about 40 to 50 minutes to get from Tengukurayama to Ochobo Rock, so be sure to allow plenty of time and stamina.
Attraction 3: Kumano Kodo Iseji, a world heritage mountain trail
The Kumano Kodo Iseji Route is a 170km long road that runs from IseJingu Jingu Shrine to the Kumano Sanzan (collective name for the three Kumano Taisha Shrines) in Wakayama Prefecture.
This is a religious road that has been called ``seven times to Ise, three times to Kumano,'' and you can enjoy a variety of scenery, including stone pavements and bamboo forests typical of the Kumano Kodo, and a path with a panoramic view of the Kumano Sea.
The route to Mt. Tengukura includes a course that passes through the Kumano Kodo Iseji Route, and when climbing Mt. Tengukura, it is often said that ``Let's enjoy the ancient road that has been selected as a World Heritage Site along with the mountain!'' It's been introduced.
The climbing route that I will introduce later on will also be introduced from Kumano Kodo Iseji.
- A little bit of trivia
- “Seven times to Ise, three times to Kumano” means “frequently visiting IseJingu and Kumano Sanzan.” An illustration of ``No matter how deep your faith, you can never have it too deep.''
Climb entrance and climbing route explained
The most traveled route to Mt. Tengukura is probably the one that passes through the Kumano Kodo and then goes to the top of Mt. Magose-togePass via Magose Pass.
There are two trailheads for this route.
The Washishita trailhead is located in KihokuTown, and the Magoshi Park trailhead is located on OwaseCity side.
The map shows the approximate location and time, but it takes about 40 minutes to climb from the Umakoshi Park side (bottom side of the photo), and about 60 minutes from the Washishita side (top side of the photo). This is the route from Washishita trailhead...
I want to fully enjoy the atmosphere of Kumano Kodo! If so, we recommend climbing from the Washishita trailhead.
Magose-togePass Pass to Tengukurayama (about 30 minutes)
After leaving the trailhead and arriving at Magose-togePass, you will temporarily deviate from the Kumano Kodo and continue walking towards the summit of Mt. Tengukurayama.
However, there is a steep climb ahead, and this can be said to be the most difficult part on the way to Mt. Tengukura.
After about 30 minutes of climbing steeply, you will arrive at Mt. Tengukurayama.
- A little bit of trivia
- The top page photo of our sightseeing Mie Mie Travel Climbing Club site is a view photo from Mt. Tengukurayama. did you know? ^ ^
[Question] Is Tengukurayama a mountain that even beginners can climb?
You can climb it!
However, please keep in mind that the climb from Magose-togePass to Mt. Tengukura is steeper than you think.
The route from the trailhead to Magose-togePass is not too steep, so I think you can enjoy walking along it just like hiking.
- Points to note
- Kumano Kodo Iseji has beautiful stone pavement, but please be careful the day after it rains as the moss on the stones can become very slippery.
Tengukurayama to Ochobo Rock (about 40-50 minutes)
As you walk east along the ridge from the top of Mt. Tengukura, you will arrive at Ochobo Rock, another observation spot introduced in attraction 2 above.
You'll be walking up and down repeatedly, so make sure you have plenty of water, food, and energy to spare.
About access
Exit the Kisei Expressway at Kaiyama IC, head south on National Route 42, and drive for about 5 minutes until you arrive at Michi-no-eki-Eki Kaizan.
There is a free parking lot (about 20 regular cars) at Michi-no-eki-Eki Kaizan, so use that to head to the trailhead. (about 10 minutes walk)
In addition to restaurants and shops selling local products, `` Michi-no-eki Kaizan'' has a tourist information center where you can get tourist pamphlets and maps of the Kumano Kodo and surrounding spots. Convenient.
Please note that there are no restrooms at Magose-togePass, so please use them before heading on.
