The 2024 Oyodo Gion Festival and Fireworks Display will be held on August 2nd (Friday) and 3rd (Saturday)! In this article, we will explain the highlights of the Oyodo Gion Festival and how to get there.

What is Oyodo Gion Festival?

The Oyodo Gion Festival is a summer event that is usually held around the end of July around the Oyodo fishing port in Meiwa Town MeiwaTown, and a fireworks display is also held in conjunction with the festival.

The festival will be held in Yoimiya in the Higashi Ward of Oyodo, and today, floats will be drawn in Miseko (Kita Ward, Naka Ward, Nishi Ward) and Yama Oizu. Also, in Sansei Ko, a mikoshi (portable shrine), which has been revived for the first time in about half a century, has appeared a few years ago, with floats being pulled over by young people from the local youth group, and mikoshi (portable shrines) being carried by local elementary school students through their respective wards. I'll parade around.

The Oyodo Gion Festival began about 270 years ago in the mid-Edo period as a folk belief to ward off epidemics, pray for the safety of parishioners, and for the development of agriculture and fishing. It is said to be a successor to Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto and Tsushima Shrine in Aichi, and its enshrined deity is Susanoo-no-mikoto.

In this article, we will explain the highlights and access to the Oyodo Gion Festival.
