01 KawakitaHandeishi?
This year, 2023, marks the 60th anniversary of KawakitaHandeishi death.
Handeiko was born as the eldest son of the 15th generation of the Kawakita family, a wealthy merchant family depicted in Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e prints.
His father died shortly after his birth, so he became the 16th head of the family at the age of one.
He has many hats, including a potter and a businessman, and is also the 6th generation president of Hyakugo Bank, headquartered in TsuCity, Mie Prefecture.
He also served as a member of TsuCity and the Mie Prefectural Assembly.
After finishing work, he would turn the potter's wheel every night.
Handeiko is a playful person!
02 SEKISUIMUSEUM
I went to SEKISUIMUSEUM has many of Handeiko's works.
Handeiko began creating works in earnest around the age of 55, and by the time she was 84, she had created between 30,000 and 40,000 works.
Handeiko, who was also well-versed in the tea ceremony (tea ceremony), began making pottery herself because she wanted to enjoy tea in a teacup that she was satisfied with.
It is said that Handeiko did not treat even a chipped bowl or a crushed pot as a failure, and never sold a single piece.
We were shown one of his works that conveys the attitude of ``taking care of things''!
The name of the work is the Tsubusuretsubo inscription ``Fukurajaku''.
As you can see, the vase is cracked. If it were a professional potter, it would probably be considered a failure, but Handeiko took advantage of the coincidence that was born in the kiln and enjoyed it by inserting a bamboo tube and decorating it with flowers. That's what I said!
It's great that you can think like this!
A special exhibition commemorating the 60th anniversary of KawakitaHandeishi 's death is being held until November 12, 2023 (Sunday).
It is said that Handeiko did not study pottery under anyone, but she became a co-worker of the haiku magazine ``Kaitsumuri'' run by Ichimo Kajishima (1883-1947) of Kuwana, and wrote a number of haiku poems. He composed many haiku poems and left behind stylish haiku paintings.
At this special exhibition, you can enjoy the world of half-deiko art born from a state of no-mind, rather than haiku and ceramic works, so please come and visit us.
Enjoy the coincidences in the kiln and turn your ideas into works of art!

03 Senkaku Kiln (formerly Hironaga Kiln)
Next, we headed to Senkaku Kiln (formerly Hironaga Kiln), which was opened by Handeiko.
By adding new creativity to the goodness of traditional Japanese pottery, our works are characterized by the deep flavor of the earth and the potter's wheel, which are both elegant and approachable.
There are currently 8 kilns of 5 types, including 2 climbing kilns.
Inside the vast garden, there are the Dorobutsu Hall, the Senkakukan, the mountain tea ceremony room made by Handeiko, and the mountain pavilion built to raise Handeiko's children.

Here too, you can see the playful side of Handeiko!
The statue is said to have had the role of welcoming guests in place of Handeiko when she was away.
The words ``How are you'' and ``Come again'' are written on the door of the zushi.
Actually, the body and head of this statue are made separately.
Since it is a place where guests are welcomed, there is an anecdote that Handeiko herself would turn her head to the side if she didn't like a customer.

04Toyoken Black Curry
Handeiko, who has a wide network of contacts, is also involved in the creation of the popular menu at the famous restaurant "Toyoken" in Mie Prefecture!
It all started when Handeiko encountered dark curry or stew in Tokyo and asked Shigekatsu Inomata, the first head chef of Toyoken in Tsu, ``Can you make a black curry?''
In response to that suggestion, after a long period of research and prototyping, we created Toyoken's traditional flavor, ``Black Curry.''
The secret to its deliciousness is the fragrant and flavorful "black roux," which is made by carefully frying high-quality Matsusaka beef tallow, flour, and secret spices.
This is an exquisite dish that has a deep flavor that you cannot imagine from ordinary curry, and is mellow and rich.
Everyone please try it once.
