What is a tuna restaurant?

Inside and outside the store

Since the COVID-19 pandemic ended, it's been extremely crowded on weekends. Because long lines tend to form, poles have been set up to make it easier to queue. It's as exciting as lining up for an attraction at a theme park.

The inside of the store, which can be seen from the entrance, is bright and feels warm. There's a souvenir corner set up, so it looks like there's more to enjoy than just food.

The inside of the store is quite large and there are plenty of seats! The atmosphere allows you to enjoy your meal slowly, so you can feel safe even if you go out with a large group.

In addition to table seating, there are also tatami-mat seating areas, so it's no problem to visit with small children. There are only four tatami-mat seating areas, so it's first come, first served!
By the way, I haven't seen anyone who looks like a staff member on the floor for some time now. What should I do with the order? Now, let me explain the ordering process exclusively for tuna restaurants!

How to order

First, choose the menu you want from the dishes lined up at the entrance. There are product samples lined up, so it's easy to understand what the menu is like. There are also non-seafood menus such as ramen and udon, and with over 20 different types in total, you'll be spoiled for choice!

If you keep going, you will find a cashier corner and the staff will greet you. Tell us the menu you have decided on and pay in advance. If you are confused about how to order, don't worry, we will kindly guide you!

After paying, you will be given a numbered round bill and a numbered paper clip with a menu card in between. This is the menu exchange ticket.

Hand the clip with the number on it to the staff in the kitchen in the center of the restaurant. When the menu is ready, the number will be read out to you, and you can exchange your food for a round bill at the delivery gate. It looks like a self-service system at a food court in a large commercial facility!

Next to the product handover counter are a la carte menus. There is a wide variety of items, including salads such as tuna salad and tuna marinade, and fried foods such as fried chicken and white fish (180 yen each, tax included). You can purchase tickets for these a la carte menus at the cash register, or you can purchase them from the ticket machine next to the shelf and hand them over to a staff member.

Latest menu for 2024

Premium marinated tuna rice bowl

I ordered the "Premium Tuna Marinated Rice Bowl" (1,180 yen). The chewy yellowfin tuna is marinated in a sauce made with white dashi and mirin, giving it a mellow flavor. And it's reasonably priced. This gorgeous rice bowl comes with a small side dish and miso soup.

Popular seafood bowl

Another popular item is the Kaisendon (1,000 yen). It is a sumptuous menu with seven kinds of fresh seafood, including yellowfin tuna, albacore tuna, seared tuna, squid, surf clams, Japanese oysters, and shrimp!

It's colorful and visually appealing! The rice is domestically produced, so it's plump and delicious! You can also choose between "white rice" or "vinegared rice" for each bowl. Choose according to your mood.

Tendon/Unadon

When I asked what menu items were not available before COVID, I was told "Tempura bowl and Eel bowl."

The Tendon is a bowl filled with shrimp, tuna, salmon, mackerel, and more! It also comes with a small bowl of tuna with grated yam and mentaiko and kelp, and costs a whopping 1,000 yen.

This hearty eel bowl uses a whole eel and is sandwiched between the rice, making it an exceptionally affordable 1,780 yen. It's a dish you'll want to eat on Doyo no Ushi no Hi.

Special menu only available on weekends

We also had the Fatty Tuna Bowl (1,580 yen), which is only available on weekends. It's a must-try for scallop lovers! You can enjoy large scallops, medium fatty tuna, and salmon roe all together. There is also the fatty Bluefin Tuna Fatty Tuna Bowl (2,000 yen), the Special Seafood Bowl (2,000 yen) made with luxurious ingredients, and the delicious wild bluefin tuna sashimi, simmered tuna collar, and grilled cheek meat, making it a tuna-filled meal! There is also the Wild Bluefin Tuna Sashimi Set Meal (2,980 yen).

Breakfast set meal

Another new item created during the COVID-19 pandemic is the breakfast set. This is recommended for those who want to eat rice, miso soup, and delicious fish for breakfast, rather than the usual coffee shop breakfast. It comes with grilled fish such as large salted mackerel and salted salmon, and tuna sashimi, and is a great deal at just 500 yen.

Recommended for those who can't decide which one to get! Weekend-only rice bowl

It was a Saturday, and they had a weekend-only bowl called the "Half & Half Bowl."

I ordered a bowl of 140g of yellowfin tuna and a bowl of tuna katsudon with sauce. You can enjoy both sashimi and fried tuna for just 1,180 yen.

The weekend-only menu changes every week, and one week included the "Tuna Sauce Pork Cutlet Bowl, Japanese-Style Dashi Pickled Chirashi Bowl" for 1,580 yen, and the "Greedy Two-Color Bowl and Hearty Eel Bowl" for 1,380 yen.

Every Friday, they announce the weekend limited edition rice bowls on their official Instagram.

You can also buy souvenirs

There is a souvenir corner in the store where you can buy souvenirs to take home. What's more, the prices are surprisingly reasonable, with 180g of seared tuna for 398 yen and 200g of yellowfin tuna fillets for 698 yen!

Recreate the taste of a tuna restaurant at home

On weekends, long lines form at restaurants around lunchtime. But for those who give up waiting and are about to go home, here's some good news! You can buy the ingredients used at the restaurant. Ohno from Daien Foods is holding pickled tuna. Just defrost it at home and serve it on rice to enjoy the taste of a tuna restaurant.

There are plenty of other ingredients in the bowl

In addition to tuna, there is also marinated trout salmon. It would be fun to recreate different bowls and share them with the family!

In the display corner on the wall, locally produced rice, sauces, Tonteki(PorkSteak)goods, and delicacies such as Tonteki are lined up.

There are also open cases for freezing and refrigerating, and there is a full lineup of products unique to a seafood processing company.

You can also buy seasoned side dishes such as simmered tuna, tail steak, minced simmered, and soft simmered tuna at reasonable prices. There will be more side dishes on your table at home♪

Even though I live in Yokkaichi, I have never actually been to a tuna restaurant. To be precise, I have been there before, but I gave up when I saw the long line. This time, I avoided the Saturday lunchtime and went before 5pm, and was able to enter smoothly. When I asked the person who answered the interview, "By the way, what about in the morning?", he said, "On weekends, people are already lining up before 10am when the breakfast set menu ends." If you don't like waiting, the best time to go is on a weekday or on the weekend evening. Of course, even if you have to wait in line, the deliciousness and reasonable price make it worth the wait.
