What is Akafukumochi?

Akafukumochi mochi was born over 300 years ago.

The name ``Akafuku'' comes from the word ``Sekishin Keifuku,'' which is said to have the meaning of ``rejoice in one's own happiness and the happiness of others with a sincere heart like that of a baby.' Akafukumochi.

These words express the state of mind of those who visit Ise Grand Shrine: ``Let's do our best with a pure heart and rejoice in the happiness of that person as if it were our own,'' as we walk along the approach to IseJingu. It is said to represent

History of Akafukumochi

Akafukumochi mochi is a rice cake with ``bean paste'' on top of it, but did you know that the ``an'' has not always been the same as it is now?

When it was first created in 1707 (Hoei 4), about 300 years ago, it started out as salted bean paste, but in the mid-18th century, during the Edo period, it changed to brown sugar, and for the next 200 years it was made with brown sugar. It seems like it is.

So, when did it become what it is today? In 1911 (Meiji 44), Akafukumochi was created using white sugar, which was still valuable at the time, for "an" to suit the taste of Empress Shoken. When I presented the mochi, Empress Dowager Shoken seemed to really like it.

Since then, Akafukumochi mochi using white sugar has been made as ``Homare no Akafukumochi'' to this day.

About shape and molding work

Speaking of the shape of Akafukumochi mochi, it is very distinctive. In fact, it is modeled after the babbling stream of the Isuzu River that flows through the sacred precincts of IseJingu, with the three lines on the bean paste representing the clear stream, and the white rice cake representing the pebbles at the bottom of the river.

Although the company has a history of over 300 years since its founding, the shape of Akafukumochi Mochi remains the same as when it was first established.

By the way, Akafukumochi for souvenirs are made in factories, but Akafukumochi for in-store dining is made by hand.

At Akafukumochi main store, you can watch the craftsmen known as ``mochi irashi'', who have been trained for over three years, making mochi at a fast pace (until around 3:00 p.m.).

Where is Akafukumochi main store located?

Walking down Oharai-Machi Street from IseJingu Grand Shrine Inner Naiku, you will find Akafukumochi Main Store in front of the entrance to Okage-yokocho.

It has a solid appearance, and the signboard with the word "Akafukumochi" written in large gold letters is the landmark.

Many people stop and take pictures of the historic main store building, which has been around since the Meiji era, and this alone is worth seeing.

At the main store, you can not only purchase Akafukumochi mochi as souvenirs, but you can also eat it leisurely inside the store.

In front of the counter, there are three large vermilion stoves that are used to boil water for making tea.

A scene unique to the main store is the sight of customers entering the store one after another, drawn in by the steam and the rich aroma of roasted green tea.

Since ancient times, the steam and aroma have been a sign of hospitality for visitors to Ise, saying, ``Please come and have some tea with me.''

This stove can be seen at Akafukumochi stores in IseCity, but the one at the main store is the only one that is still in operation for actually boiling water!

It is an annual event to repaint it this bright vermilion color at the end of every year.

In addition, there are tatami-style seats and veranda seats in the store, and the veranda seats, which are recommended by the store staff, allow you to relax and enjoy the view of the Isuzu River flowing in front of you.
