What is the lucky way for Setsubun in 2024? Introducing Setsubun events in Mie Prefecture! [2024 edition]

掲載日:2024.01.26

Setsubun is a festival that wards off evil spirits, epidemics, and natural disasters, and brings in good fortune.

Setsubun in 2024 is Saturday, February 3rd. Events related to Setsubun are held at shrines, temples, and various facilities in Mie Prefecture.

Let's get rid of evil spirits and bring good fortune into the new year with Setsubun events.

What is Setsubun?

Setsubun, as the name suggests, means ``separating the seasons.'' Setsubun is the day before the beginning of the four seasons: the first day of spring, the first day of summer, the first day of autumn, and the first day of winter.

Nowadays, many events remain and are passed down during Setsubun, the day before the first day of spring, which is especially important as the beginning of the year according to the lunar calendar.

What kind of event is Setsubun?

In the past, people believed that evil spirits invaded during the change of seasons, so they held various events to exorcise evil spirits before welcoming the new year.

Bean-throwing is also an event to ``drive out bad things and bring in good fortune'' to welcome the new year. In addition, there are some regions where the custom of eating ehomaki and sardines in hopes of good health throughout the year remains.

When is Setsubun in 2024?

This year's Setsubun is Saturday, February 3rd.
When is Setsubun? When asked, many people probably think it's February 3rd.

Actually, Setsubun is not a fixed day. Setsubun is said to be the day before the first day of spring, so the day of Setsubun may change depending on when the first day of spring falls.

The Earth's orbit around the sun is divided into 24 parts called the 24 solar terms, which include the first day of spring, the first day of summer, the first day of autumn, and the first day of winter.

It takes exactly one year for the earth to orbit the sun once, but there is an error in that, and this is corrected by adding one day to the year in a "leap year" every four years. However, in leap years, there will be an additional 24 hours per day, but if the number of hours increases by one day every four years, the total time will be about 45 minutes shorter than four revolutions of the sun.

Due to this small error and leap years, the first day of spring shifts slightly and the day of Setsubun also changes in some years.

By the way, Setsubun in 2021 was February 2nd. The year after next, 2025, will also be February 2nd.

What is the lucky direction for Setsubun in 2023?

The lucky direction for 2024 is "East Northeast Wei East".
It is said that if you face the ``Eho'' direction on Setsubun, which is said to be a good direction for the year, and silently eat Ehomaki with your wish in mind, your wish will come true! There seem to be many different types of ehomaki, including sushi rolls and roll cakes.
