In Ise, there is a custom called Tsukitachi Mairi, where people visit IseJingu on the first day of every month.
This is a way to express gratitude for getting up early at the beginning of the month, and praying for a safe month ahead. In front of Naiku, various shops open from early morning to entertain the visitors who come to visit the temple on the first day of the month.
One of the most famous among them is Akafukumochi 's "Tsutsutachi Tsuitachi-Mochi". It's so popular that people start lining up early in the morning, and it can sometimes sell out as early as 7 a.m.
