Tohei-ji Temple's cypress tree grove [prefecturally designated natural monument] Toheiji-no-kijusou

In the precincts of Toheiji Temple, there are large and small stone Buddha statues and a grove of Japanese cypress trees that cover the Five Ring Pagoda.
All of them have trunk circumferences of approximately 4 to 6 meters and tree heights of over 10 meters, and are vigorous and fruit-bearing.
This tree is called Stajii, and is a representative tree species of Japan's temperate evergreen broad-leaved forests.
In June, it blends in with the cedar and bamboo forests, producing pale yellow flowers that can be seen from far away, and in autumn it bears large acorns.
Acorns have long been a valuable source of nutrition, serving not only humans but also many animals living in forests.
It was designated as a prefectural natural monument on February 7, 1978 (S53).
