It was completed in 1931 as a key player in the modernization of Yokkaichi Port.
It has a total length of 58 m, a width of 4 m, and a 16.6 m central girder section that is wound with wire from the top of the 15.6 m high steel tower that stands on the piers and is raised up to an 80 degree angle.
It is the oldest existing movable bridge in Japan. Moreover, it is currently in operation, with 5 to 10 round trip freight trains passing through it each day.
In 1998, it was designated as a national important cultural property.
