Sarumozuka (Basho haiku monument)

Head towards TsuCity on National Route 163, and it's on the left before the Nagano Tunnel in the Kamiawa district. In 1689, when the haiku master MatsuoBasho was on his way to his hometown of Iga-Ueno, he found a monkey shivering in the rain on a mountain pass over Nagano, and wrote the famous phrase, ``The first shigure, even the monkey is small.'' This haiku monument remains as Sarumozuka.
