Explanatory text
"The original species of iris, the Japanese iris, is a perennial plant that grows wild in the grasslands and marshes of the mountains and fields. The shape and color vary depending on the region, and it is thought that collecting these flowers became the origin of horticulture. They were cultivated before the early Edo period, but there are almost no early varieties that are still cultivated, so we have to rely on old documents. Japanese irises are divided into Edo, Ise, Higo, and American varieties, named after the regions where they were cultivated. Since our garden was started by Maeda Shichiro, who has been involved, albeit in a small way, in the revival of Ise irises after the war, we currently produce 500 varieties of each type, 250,000 plants grown in 9cm pots, 12cm pots, and 21cm pots, and 300,000 plants grown outdoors, and ship them to seed companies, etc. During the flowering period in June, we open the garden to the public and offer free tours.
