Explanatory text

The Banryu Tower, built facing Shichiri-no-Watashi in Kawaguchi-cho, symbolizes the riverside town of Kuwana. It has been faithfully restored as a symbol of Kuwana that was once a common sight for people travelling along Tokaido. The famous ukiyo-e print "Fifty-three Stations of Tokaido" by Utagawa Hiroshige also depicts this tower symbolically to represent Kuwana, which was renowned as a famous castle on the sea. "Banryu" refers to a dragon crouching before ascending to the heavens. Dragons are sacred beasts that control water, and are widely used in China as decorative motifs for temples and shrines. The Banryu Tower is thought to have been placed here as a guardian deity of voyages.
