Explanatory text
Kamishima is located at the mouth of Ise Bay, about 14km northeast of Toba Port and about 3.5km west of Cape Irago in Aichi Prefecture, with a total area of 0.76km2 and a circumference of 3.9km. It is the furthest of the four inhabited islands and is famous for being the setting for Yukio Mishima's novel "Shiosai." In addition, it is prone to natural disasters such as strong waves from the Pacific Ocean, and because the entire island is mountainous, houses are densely packed in a stepped pattern from the port to the mountaintop, forming a settlement typical of a fishing village.
