MatsuuraTakeshiro, the man who gave Hokkaido its name, was born in 1818 (Bunka 15) in Sugawara Village, Ichishi County (present-day Onoe MatsusakaCity Matsusaka City). He traveled to Ezo for the first time at the age of 28 and subsequently made six expeditions to the region in his lifetime.
