Explanatory text

At dawn on New Year's Day, as the eastern sky brightens, men from all over the island stab bamboo into a ring made of bundles of oleander branches (a ring about 2m in diameter that resembles the sun), lift it up, and then drop it. There are various theories about the origin of this festival, including that it is the northern limit of solar worship from the south, praying for the return of the sun in the new year, or that it is a sexual ritual.
