Explanatory text

This is a festival to celebrate the return of the sea goddess Ichikishimahime to her shrine on Oshima Island, where female divers and fishermen offer abalone and other catches of the day, and after a ritual to pray for safety at sea and a good catch, boats and people splash seawater on each other and throw it into the sea. It is a festival of forgiveness for all. It is held every year on the 1st of June in the lunar calendar.
