Explanatory text

Meotoiwa(rocksofthemarriedcouple) Iwa rocks of FutamiuraBeach have been known since ancient times as a place of remote worship of the sunrise, and about 700m offshore in the sea is the Okitama Jinseki (a sacred stone associated with the enshrined deity Sarutahiko-no-Okami), and Meotoiwa(rocksofthemarriedcouple) are considered to be its torii gate. The sunrises that can be seen from here are famous throughout the country, and especially from May to July, the sun rises between the rocks of Meotoiwa(rocksofthemarriedcouple) Iwa rocks, painting the surrounding sea crimson red - a truly moving and majestic scene.
