Explanatory text
This festival is based on the legend that the villagers made a huge straw sandal the size of a tatami mat to frighten the giant Dandarabocchi, who was ravaging the village, and made him retreat. A religious ceremony is held at Namikiri Shrine, and the straw sandals are then carried to the beach, where prayers are made for safety at sea and a good catch before being released into the sea. There are also portable shrines and dancers on the way, and a fireworks display at night.
