During the Edo period, this post town flourished as a base for alternate attendance and pilgrimages to Ise Shrine. While most of the old Tokaido post towns are no longer in their original form, this one still retains the townscape of those days, and has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the national government.
