Explanatory text
This is a dangerous spot on the ocean that separates the Enshu Sea and the Kumano Sea. The spectacular sight of the Kuroshio Current crashing against the cliffs is said to be the best in Shima. The town is lined with narrow, stone-paved slopes on a sea-eroded plateau, and the houses are surrounded by high stone walls and windbreaks to protect against strong winds from the sea, providing ideal materials for art.
