"MatsuuraTakeshiro, the man who gave Hokkaido its name, was born in 1818 (the first year of the Bunsei era) in Sugawara Village, Ichishi County (Onoe Town MatsusakaCity). He first traveled to Ezo at the age of 28, and later explored the area six times in his life. At the age of 52, he was appointed as the Ezo Development Judge, and established the names of the prefecture and the country. This is his birthplace."
