Explanatory text
The branches spread out horizontally, reaching a height of about 2 meters. It was given the name "Garyu Ume" (Lying Dragon Plum) because it resembles a dragon lying down. Legend has it that when Sugawara no Michizane was demoted to Dazaifu in Kyushu, he prayed at IseJingu for his false charges to be cleared, and had his retainers plant it. It blooms a little later than other plum trees, reaching its peak in early March, and bears double flowers.
