Explanatory text

MatsuoBasho set foot in this Awa region twice in his 50-year life. The first time was to visit the Shin-Daibutsu-ji Temple from Ueno, and the second time was to cross the Nagano Pass from Hisai. The phrase "The willows, pushing through the umbrella," engraved on the monument, was written in the spring of 1694 (Genroku 7) at Basho-an in Edo and is included in the "Charcoal Bag."
