Explanatory text

At the top of the steep stone steps, Fukuo Shrine enshrines Bishamonten, who is said to have been enshrined by Prince Shotoku 1,200 years ago, and bustles around the area on the third of each month as a festival day. The history of this shrine dates back about 1,400 years, when during the reign of Emperor Bidatsu, Buddhist sculptor Anami came to Japan from Baekje and carved a statue of Bishamonten, later placing the statue on Mount Fukuo at the command of Prince Shotoku to protect the country and IseJingu. The shrine grounds are densely covered with old cedar trees, creating a solemn atmosphere, and one of these, a huge sacred kounogi called Prince Cedar, which is over 1,000 years old, speaks of the shrine's ancient history.
