Explanatory text
Known as Notenjin, the Ueno Tenjin Festival in May is famous. MatsuoBasho, a native of Iga Ueno, dedicated his first collection of haiku, "Kai Ohohi." The zelkova tree in the precincts is said to sprout twice a year, in spring and autumn, and is famous as the "two-bud zelkova," and is designated as a natural monument of the city. In addition, the tower gate and bell tower, built in the mid-Edo period, are designated as prefectural cultural properties.
