Mie Prefecture has been gaining fame as a pearl producing region since the invention of pearl farming by the late Mr. KokichiMikimoto. The farming techniques of the prefecture's pearl farmers are highly regarded nationwide, and the high quality of their pearls has been recognized, with the prefecture winning awards almost every year at the National Pearl Farming Competition.
