Explanatory text

This is the residence of Basho's disciple Hattori Toyoshi, and is one of Basho's five hermitages. It is a typical hermitage from the Edo period that has been most closely preserved in its original form. Basho's Iga disciples, centered around Toyoshi, held haiku gatherings here, and Basho himself often visited here when he returned home. It came to be called Minomushi-an after the haiku poem "Come listen to the sound of the bagworm, to the grass hermitage." It is the only one of Basho's five hermitages that still remains today. There is a teahouse in the garden.
