Matsusaka beef is famous throughout the country. The production area for Matsusaka beef is "the former 22 municipalities and members of the former Matsusaka Beef Cattle Producers Association" (the number of municipalities is as of November 1, 2004), the target cattle are "Japanese black cattle and heifers registered in the Matsusaka Beef Individual Identification Management System", the fattening period is "the longest and final fattening period in the production area" and "the cattle that meet the system's conditions such as beef carcass grading and are shipped". The famous black cattle are fed lots of feed such as soybean meal and groats, and when they don't have an appetite, they are given beer, and they are raised with great care, including sunbathing, massages, and afternoon walks. Due to their excellent qualities and thorough breeding management, they are recognized as the best beef cattle in Japan, and their excellent taste is praised throughout the country and the world as a "work of art of meat".
