Explanatory text

The temple was founded in 709. It is one of the three great Kannon statues of Japan. The principal image is the Bodhisattva Kannon. It is an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple that has been a place of prayer for successive shoguns and the Todo family, the feudal lords of Tsu, and is home to numerous cultural assets. Today, it is a bustling center of faith for the common people. It is also home to Kokufu Amida, the local Buddha of Amaterasu Omikami Shrine in Ise. (Photo taken in autumn 2009)
