Explanatory text

This church was built in 1942 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Basho's birth. It depicts Basho on his travels, with the round roof representing his traveling hat, the octagonal shape at the bottom representing his Buddhist robe, the pillars representing his walking stick, and the wooden plaque in the "Haisei-den" (haiku poet's hall) representing his face.
