Saio, an unmarried princess, was sent to Ise as the staff of Amaterasu Omikami every time an emperor ascended the throne. The women were selected from among the Imperial Princes and Princesses through fortune-telling called Bokujo, and after living in the capital for three years, they departed for Ise. The Saio system, which began during the reign of Emperor Tenmu during the Asuka period, lasted for about 600 years until it came to an end during the Nanbokucho period, during which time 64 Saio were appointed.
Now, ``Gunko'' is the procession of Saio heading to Ise, and at its peak, more than 500 government officials and court ladies accompanied them. The ``Sokaren'' of the priest, the oxcart of the ladies-in-waiting, and the people dressed in brightly colored costumes in preparation for their journey. Its elegant appearance was exactly like a picture scroll of the dynasty.
It is approximately 120 kilometers from the capital to Ise saikuu. The group, which lasted five nights and six days, marched solemnly through the mountains and fields. That's how people's various thoughts are put on it.
