When you think of Yokkaichi, you may have a strong image of an industrial area or a night-view industrial complex, but the western part of Yokkaichi is actually a region rich in nature with tea plantations. The Mizusawa district there is the main production area for kabusetea.
Where is Mizusawa?
The Mizusawa district is located at the foot of the Suzuka Mountains, at the southwestern tip of YokkaichiCity and is a very beautiful area rich in nature.
It is located right between Yunoyama Onsen and TsubakiGrandShrine, so we recommend visiting these three places together.
It has good access from the Shin-Meishin Expressway's Komono IC and Suzuka PA Smart IC, so the number of people visiting from Kyoto, Osaka, and Nagoya has increased since its opening.
What is kabusetea?
kabusetea is a type of tea made by covering the new buds of a tea plant with a black covering called kanreisha and growing them for about two weeks before harvesting.
By covering it with cheesecloth to block direct sunlight, the increase in catechin, which is a bitter ingredient, is suppressed, and theanine, which is a umami ingredient, is less likely to be broken down. For this reason, kabusetea is a tea that is full of flavor and sweetness. It also increases chlorophyll, making the tea leaves a bright green color.
