What is the Freight Railway Museum?
The Freight Railway Museum is the only museum in Japan with a railway freight theme, located in front of niu Station on the Sangi Railway. Railway freight cars, which were used all over the country, come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes depending on their various uses. As railway freight transportation was phased out due to the transition to motorization, this museum preserves and exhibits a wide variety of ``freight cars,'' which are valuable modernization heritage that survived demolition. . It is run entirely by volunteer staff and is funded by donations collected through goodwill.
indoor exhibition
The museum building is only open to the public once a month. The building was originally used as a warehouse for receiving cargo, and you can still feel the vestiges of those days. Information about railway freight, such as freight car plates and rare books, is preserved and exhibited. We also sell original museum goods and used models. The prices are reasonable, and the proceeds are used to pay for freight car repairs.
outdoor exhibition
You can freely view the outdoor freight cars at any time. The first photo is the largest vehicle in our collection, the Shiki 160. A freight car used to transport large transformers. To coincide with the 20th anniversary, we are restoring a freight car that was manufactured 123 years ago in Yokkaichi to its original appearance!
In 2017, our staff heard that the casing of a former Kansai Railway steel boxcar that had been used as a storage area in the Kanto region would bedismantled, and when we approached the owner about selling it, he agreed to preserve it and display it, and it came to our museum. I did. However, since it was being used as a storage room, it had no wheels and was only the box on top. However, as this freight car is one of the oldest in Japan and has ties to this area, having been manufactured in Yokkaichi 123 years ago, restoration work is being carried out at a rapid pace this year as it celebrates its 20th anniversary. Masu. The restoration costs were raised through crowdfunding, and the goal was exceeded. Although the restoration will not be completed in time on the day of the event, you will be able to observe the work in progress.
