[Ise Shima] Old folk restaurant (Indonesian cuisine) found in Surf City Ago-cho Kokufu

掲載日:2023.11.16

Kokufu Beach in Ise-Shima, Mie Prefecture is crowded with surfers from both inside and outside the prefecture throughout the year. At the beginning of 2023, a new Indonesian restaurant, BALI HOUSE, opened in a renovated old folk house. Since its opening in 2011, BALI HOUSE has been extremely popular among surfers visiting Ise, but this time it has been reborn with a new and very nice old folk house look. I have to introduce this to everyone! That's why I wrote this article. I would be happy if you could read it to the end. Let's go!

The beauty of Bali is now in Ise-Shima! The charm of old folk house restaurants

A restaurant that feels like a hidden gem, tucked away in an alley surrounded by Japanese fences. Food and atmosphere that can only be enjoyed here.

The exterior of the store has such an atmosphere that your expectations will be high at first glance. When you step inside, you will find a stylish space that combines the exotic and ethnic atmosphere of Indonesia with the profound feeling of an old private house built over time. The store is spacious on one floor and you take off your shoes at the entrance, so you can feel very relaxed inside. It's a wonderful shop like this, but it's actually in a hidden location that's almost impossible to find unless you're visiting the store specifically. If you get close, there is Kokufu Shrine next to the shop, which is easy to find, so I recommend you to come and check it out.

Menu introduction

I would like to introduce you to the dishes I received when I visited for lunch!

The first photo is "Nasi Goreng Lunch" (mango juice ordered separately)
Nasi goreng is a staple of Indonesian cuisine. This is fried rice (fried rice) in Japan. The nasi goreng made by the owner and chef, Lian, has an exquisite combination of spices to suit the Japanese palate, and it is spicy and very delicious. The homemade shrimp and chewy corn kakiage that came with the dish were both delicious and worth the price.

The second one is meatball soup
This also came with "Nasi Goreng Lunch". It was full of umami and had a comforting taste. It was very delicious.

The third photo is BALI HOUSE's original coconut chicken curry "Opor Ayam Lunch"
This was really spicy, but I finished it all at once without taking a break. I heard that this is the menu item with the highest repeat rate, and after eating it, I understood why it was so popular. This spiciness is addictive (lol). The garnished warm vegetables with peanut sauce went very well with the curry and was delicious. It also comes with fried corn that has a chewy texture, making it a very satisfying curry that allows you to enjoy tropical Indonesia while staying in Ise-Shima.

The fourth one is Susu Santan (coconut milk)
When I asked about drinks that would go well with curry, she recommended this coconut milk, so I tried it. The combination of spicy curry and sweet coconut milk was outstanding. This combination is highly recommended. Please join us!
(If you are not a fan of spicy food, please let the staff know when ordering so they can adjust the spiciness for you)

■Price of introduced dishes
Nasi goreng lunch 1,000 yen
(The mango juice in the photo is an additional 200 yen drink set)
Opole Ayam (curry) lunch 1,300 yen
Susu Santan (coconut milk) 500 yen
*There are 7 standard lunch sets, and there are also various Indonesian dishes on the menu.
*The evening session will be a la carte only.

Commitment to local ingredients

I asked Leanne about the ingredients she uses.
They are particular about using local ingredients from Shima, so the rice they use is Koshihikari rice from Murakami Farm, which is produced in Ise Shima and polished in-house. Seasonal vegetables are also local. Of course, the green lettuce is also a local feature. In the coming season, hotpot dishes will begin, so if you make a reservation, you can also have oysters from Toba Anrashima. They are also preparing sweets using locally grown strawberries and red pearls, so keep an eye out for the coming winter season.

You can quickly check out seasonal a la carte items and new menus that are constantly appearing on the restaurant's Instagram story.

History of Mr. and Mrs. Lian

We would like to introduce the history of the restaurant's owner and chef, Mr. Lian from Bali, Indonesia, who loves surfing, and his wife from ShimaCity who have continued to run the restaurant together.

Mr. Lian originally worked as a chef in Bali.
In 2007, he married his wife who was sightseeing in Bali and came to Japan.
After that, he worked in the kitchens of Toba Kokusai Hotel, etc.
In 2012, we opened "BALI HOUSE" in a rented small wooden hut on the beach of Ise Kokufu Beach, where the beautiful white sand beach stretches 3km from north to south.
2014 Moved store to Futami-cho IseCity
Around 2020, overcoming the harsh situation of the coronavirus pandemic with a kitchen car,
In January 2023, they returned to Kokufu-no-hama, renovated an old folk house by themselves with the help of friends, and opened the old folk house restaurant "BALI HOUSE." That's what it feels like.

When I asked him why he opened a shop in this town, he said, ``The people there are very kind and warm, and the atmosphere is similar to Bali, where I was born and raised.''
I was impressed by the way the wife looked at Rian-san as she spoke with such gentle eyes. They were a wonderful couple who were very close.

Recommended nearby spots ①

■ anori Anori Lighthouse
After eating at BALI HOUSE, why not stop by anori Lighthouse, which is a nearby spot recommended by Rian and is about a 10-minute drive away?
It is a rectangular white lighthouse that is rare nationwide, and is one of only 16 lighthouses in Japan that you can actually climb. There is also a lighthouse museum, lawn square, and cafe in the surrounding area, so you can enjoy the sightseeing feeling even more.

How did you like this introduction to BALI HOUSE? Actually, there was a menu item that I was really interested in but didn't try this time, and that is ``Bali-yaki Ise-Udon''. A BALI HOUSE original made with Ise Shima's famous Ise-Udon stir-fried with spicy sauce. He is confident that this is a product that he hopes the locals will enjoy as well. I definitely want to order it when I visit again!
