掲載日:2024.01.04

SENJUJIHeadTempleoftheShinshuTakadaSchool is the head temple of the Takada school of Jodo Shinshu, which inherits the teachings of Shinran Shonin. It is one of the representative temples of Mie Prefecture, and is famous for having the Mieido Hall and Nyoraido Hall within the precincts designated as the prefecture's first national treasure buildings in 2017.

At SENJUJIHeadTempleoftheShinshuTakadaSchool a large puja called ``Oshichiya'' is held every year from January 9th to 16th to remember Shinran Shonin. On the 7th night of 2024, various events will be held, including one of the largest bamboo light displays in the Tokai region. In this article, we will explain the 2024 Seven Nights festival at SENJUJIHeadTempleoftheShinshuTakadaSchool.

What is SENJUJIHeadTempleoftheShinshuTakadaSchool?

The entire precincts of SENJUJIHeadTempleoftheShinshuTakadaSchool are about twice the size of Tokyo Dome (approximately 30,000 tsubo), and in addition to two national treasure buildings, there are 11 nationally designated important cultural properties.

Recently, it has become a hot topic as a filming location for the movie “My Happy Marriage” (to be released in March 2023) starring Ren Meguro (Snow Man)!

What is “Seven Nights”?

The Hoonko ceremony of the head temple is held on the occasion of the death of the founder of the sect, January 16th (November 28th in the lunar calendar).

It is the heaviest puja of the year, and is affectionately known as Ohanaya because it lasts for seven days and nights. The ``Hoon-ko ceremony,'' which extols the saint's virtues, is read on the first night of each day, and the ``Go-eden,'' which depicts the story of the saint's life, is displayed in the margins of the Hoon-ko ceremony. It has become customary.

Fondly known as ``Onanaya-san,'' the temple is lined with stalls in the temple town in front of the gate, and is visited by many people every year. Only during the ``Onanaya-san'' period, you can see the precincts lit up with lanterns. You can enjoy a sophisticated atmosphere that is completely different from the daytime.

Event period: January 9, 2024 (Tuesday) to January 16, 2024 (Tuesday)

The Seven Nights Special Exhibition ``Jonto: Successive Shonins Passing on the Lantern'' is currently being held.

Approximately 800 years ago, Shinran, the holy man who founded the temple, opened the teachings of Shin Buddhism. The fact that we, who live in the Reiwa era, are able to hear the teachings of God is due to the efforts of the successive monks of the Takada school, who have cherished and passed on the light of the teachings without extinguishing them. In this exhibition, we will introduce the figures of successive Shonins who were loved and respected by Shinran Shonin, and we will also display outstanding crafts from each era that have been handed down to Senshuji.

In addition to this, many other events are held, including various memorial services.

O-nanaya is affectionately known as ``Onanaya-san'' by the locals, and many people from outside the city, including dancers, visit SENJUJIHeadTempleoftheShinshuTakadaSchool.

In addition to ``special lectures'' on the ``hoon sermon'' and the teachings of the Shinshu, there are ``hatachi gatherings'' to celebrate the arrival of new adults, and ``nonosama wo picture exhibition'' where pictures drawn by kindergarteners are displayed. Various pujas and events are held in the vast grounds.

There will also be food stalls.

There are many stalls lined up in Jinaimachi, which is located around SENJUJIHeadTempleoftheShinshuTakadaSchool.

This is a rare opportunity in Mie Prefecture, where there are few winter festivals.
