These shiny mud balls are popular for their jewel-like luster and colorful colors.

This time I tried it with my 5-year-old son, and even though it was his first time, we were able to make beautiful, shiny mud balls!

That's because...a professional plasterer carefully taught us how to make it!
Please feel free to come and experience this experience even if it is your first time or you have small children.
*Children under elementary school age are asked to make the craft together with a parent or guardian.

Explanation by a plasterer

A professional plasterer from the Mie Prefecture Plastering Industry Association will teach you how to make it.

When we spoke to the chairman, Mr. Kawai, he told us that the idea came from his desire to "let the younger generation know the good points of lime plaster."

Recently, there are fewer houses with mud walls, and more and more people are unaware of the professions of plastering and plastering.
In order to help people become more familiar with plaster and learn about its benefits, we have started making glowing mud balls using plastering techniques.

Now, a plasterer will teach us how to make glowing mud balls.
So how exactly is it made? We will explain the materials and process.

What materials and tools do you use?

The materials needed to make glowing mud balls are mud balls, white plaster, and colored plaster.

The tools used include everyday items such as milk bottles and film containers, as well as cloth and a stand to place the mud balls on.
We use various tools to polish the mud balls.

This time, you could choose from three colors for the colored plaster: red, blue, and yellow.

Mud balls made in the same way as clay walls

Mud balls are made through the same process as materials used to build mud walls, which involves mixing soil and water and then drying them.

Don't worry, the ball shape is already made. The mud balls made by experienced plasterers are very beautiful.
Participants will experience the process of applying plaster to the mud balls and polishing them to make them shiny.

After listening carefully to the craftsman's explanation, we immediately started making glowing mud balls.

First, we apply plaster to the round mud balls.
Spread the plaster little by little, relying on the feel of your hands.

A layer of white plaster is used as a base, and then a layer of colored plaster is applied on top of it.
While listening to the craftsman's advice, we apply two, three, and then a few more coats.

Polish it on a milk bottle

Next, place the mud ball over the opening of the milk bottle and rotate it slowly, using the edge of the bottle to gently polish the mud ball.
You can see that the matte mud ball gradually takes on a glossy finish.

It is important to polish slowly, so patience is required during this process.
The craftsmen will encourage you by saying "Just a little bit more!" and "Now you need to work hard!" and help you, supporting you to make shiny mud balls.

Change your tools and polish them

Once the shine appears, it's time for the finishing process!
Use the edge of a plastic film case to polish the fine details.
At this point, the accompanying adults are also engrossed.

After the plastic, polish it with your fingers and finally finish by gently polishing it with a cloth.

The shiny mud balls are polished using different tools.
In fact, building clay walls involves a similar process, where the walls are polished using tools of various materials and hands.

It is a valuable experience that allows you to come into contact with traditional house building through making glowing mud balls.

Complete! ! !

After about 40 minutes of work, the glowing mud balls are finally complete!
This was my first time participating, but thanks to the kind support from the craftsmen, even my 5-year-old son was able to make such beautiful mud balls!

The mud balls will have marble-like patterns and will be one of a kind, shiny and unique even though they are made from the same ingredients.
