Okage-yokocho "Boy's Festival"

Date: April 27, 2024 (Sat) - May 5, 2024 (Sun)

May is when the wind smells and the grass sprouts. Carp streamers swimming leisurely in the bright blue sky. Children's Day always makes me feel excited.
``Boy's Festival'' is an old event that has been going on since the Nara period. It is also known as the Iris Festival, and on the night of May 4th, people tied up irises and mugworts, which ward off evil spirits, and placed them under eaves or took a bath in an irises bath to pray for good health. Since the Edo period, it has become an event to pray for a boy's healthy growth and career advancement, by reading irises with the word ``Shobu,'' decorating them with brave armor and helmets, and setting up carp streamers.
At Okage-yokocho, we celebrate Boys' Festival by cherishing the wishes embedded in this good old Japanese traditional culture. Please enjoy it with your family.
