What is Okage Inu...
“I went to Ise, I saw Iseji, at least once in my life.”
During the Edo period, ``Okage Mairi'' was popular among common people. It is said that millions of people visit Ise every month. However, some of them were sick and unable to go to pray for blessings even if they wanted to. The dog that is said to have come to Ise in place of his master is the Okage dog. Apparently, he was taken there by someone in his neighborhood who was going to pray for Okage.

It is said that it was popular in the late Edo period, and people sent people with money for the trip and a note saying they were going to visit Ise tied to their necks. This is what is called a "dog substitute."
In ``Okage Mairi Meiwa Shiniki,'' there is a description of a dog visiting Okage. It was considered a virtue to give alms to the substitute dogs, so people passing by helped them.
