<New Collection Exhibition> “Together with Kawakita KawakitaHandeishi Sopa and Tsuboshima Tohei
Date: Saturday, April 13, 2024 - Sunday, June 23, 2024 10:00-17:00
Last year (2023), two collections of works by Kawakita Tahandeishi (1878-1963), rich in both quality and quantity, were donated to SEKISUIMUSEUM. They are the "Omori Soba Collection" and the "Tsuboshima Dohei Collection" (in order of donation).
Omori Sopa (real name: Omori Koichiro, 1905-1995) worked for Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc., and later for Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc., and worked hard to provide electricity to Hiroei Touen, a pottery shop that Handeishi opened at the foot of Mt. Hase in the western outskirts of TsuCity shortly after the war, laying the foundations of the infrastructure. Sopa loved the tea ceremony, and shared the same hobby as Handeishi. He was also a member of the Kagero-kai, a hobby club centered around Handeishi. Handeishi gave him the pen name "Sopa," and there is a well-known story of how when he was almost renamed "Omori Undo (Udon)," he protested and the name became "Sopa."
Tsuboshima Tohei (real name: Tsuboshima Kazuo, 1929-2013) met Handeishi during the war and became his beloved pupil almost at the same time that Hironaga Touen was established, creating a unique master-disciple relationship in which the master was an amateur and the pupil a professional. After Handeishi's death, he presided over Hironaga Kiln and was the ceramist who kept the kiln fires burning for 50 years until 2013. The name "Tohei" was also given to him by Handeishi, and is said to be a decomposition of the radical and tsubo (shape) parts of the character "tsubo" in his surname.
The collections of these two men, who were close to Handeishi, were directly inherited by Handeishi and contain many masterpieces that are imbued with his heartfelt feelings. This exhibition will showcase representative works from the two newly donated collections, totaling approximately 80 pieces, and will also introduce the activities of these two men who supported Handeishi in the early days of the Hironaga Kiln.
