What is the All Japan University Ekiden?

The All-Japan University Ekiden is known as one of the three major student ekiden races along with the Izumo Ekiden and the Hakone Ekiden, and this year marks its 56th run.

The official name is the Chichibunomiya Cup All-Japan Collegiate Ekiden vs. School Championships, and it was planned by the Tokai Student Athletics Federation in 1970 with the idea of ``a relay race in which universities from all over the country could participate and determine the true number one in Japan.'' Since the first tournament was held, it continues to this day.

In 2024, the race will be held on Sunday, November 3rd, and a total of 27 teams will participate, including 17 representative schools that have won through seeded schools and qualifying tournaments in eight regions across the country, as well as open participation from the Japan University Federation Selected Team and the Tokai University Federation Selected Team, competing over 106.8km of eight sections from Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya to Ise Shrine IseJingu.
