SENJUJIHeadTempleoftheShinshuTakadaSchool Karamon
At the gate in front of Nyorai-do Hall, wood turning began in 1809, the ground was broken in 1820, and the building was raised in 1844.
The roof is made of cypress bark, and it is called Karamon because of the large Karahafu on the front and back eaves. It is noteworthy that the four supporting pillars are shaped like they are stepped diagonally outwards from the waist down. All of the materials are made of keyaki wood, which has been carefully selected to be of high quality. Openwork carvings of vibrant chrysanthemums and peonies are carved between the waist-long press and the hikari, the door, the small wall beside it, and the transom, and carvings of parent and child lions and sumo wrestlers are also carved on other parts. The gate has an ornate and complex structure throughout. A woodblock elevation diagram that is thought to have been distributed at the time of construction remains, and it appears that two options were initially considered: a cypress bark roof and a real tile roof.
The master carpenters were the second generation of Sakuemon Mitsunori and Koichi Takagi of Hachiman, Omi Province (Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture), and Mitsunori was the grandson of the man who built Nyorai-do Hall.
