SENJUJIHeadTempleoftheShinshuTakadaSchool Garden (Unyuen) Unyuen

This garden, which is adjacent to the back of both mido halls, is called ``Unyuen'' and consists of a pond garden on the north side with a central island, and a pond garden on the south side with two ojima. The garden is arranged in a circular pattern with ponds and fountains connected by a narrow stream in the center. Pass through a field of cedar moss and various bamboo trees, pass through a somon gate with a thatched roof, and turn left to reach a rectangular stone bridge, which leads along a series of stepping stones to the Anrakuan tea room. There is a theory that the garden was created before the Nanbokucho period, but the style of the stone bridge dates back to the mid-Edo period.
The tea ceremony room consists of two buildings, the main seat and the abbreviated seat, and the main seat is called Anrakuan. It seats a small number of people with two and a half tatami mats and a half tatami scale board, and has unusual features such as a sliding door with a taiko drum between the host and the audience. It is said that this was a collaboration between Sen no Rikyu's eldest son Michiyasu and Oda Nobunaga's younger brother Yurakusai, and there is also a legend that the name Anraku-an was also taken from the names of these two men. It is also said to have been relocated from a seat built on Mt. Kubota in 1658, but in any case, it is considered to be a famous seat from the early Edo period.
