Natsumi Haiji Temple was built between the end of the 7th century and the first half of the 8th century, and was burnt down around the end of the 10th century. Due to the topographical constraints of the hillside, the layout of the temple is unique, with the lecture hall located to the southwest of the main hall.

Excavation research revealed that the Kondo building is a unique building with a width of 3 ken and a depth of 2 ken, the same as the Yamada-dera temple ruins, a special historical site in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture. The temple was designated as a national historic site on March 8, 1990, as it is a valuable temple site that shows the deep ties with the central power of Yamato due to the large number of Buddha statues of various types excavated there.

In the history of Nara Yakushiji Temple, it is written that Emperor Tenmu's daughter, Princess Oki, built Shofukuji Temple in Nabari District, Iga Province to mourn her father's body, and it is possible that ``Natsumi Haiji Temple'' may be this Shofukuji Temple. It is said.

The adjacent Natsumi Haiji Exhibition Hall exhibits excavated items such as the unique pillar arrangement of the Kondo building, the restored Kondo building, the restored Kondo hall, the Senbutsu wall, and other excavated items such as the Senbutsu wall, which has been restored to full size, as well as the animated video It provides a historical overview of the abandoned temple.
