A zelkova tree that is said to be over 1000 years old stands at the bottom of the stone steps that lead up to the main gate of Shinpuku-in Temple, at the back of the row of cherry blossom trees known as the ``Santaki Cherry Blossoms''.
The massive main trunk, which is approximately 25m tall and approximately 6.7m in circumference at breast height, is so imposing that it makes you feel that it is larger than its actual size.
At the time it was designated by the prefecture, its name was ``Santaki no Zelkova'' and there were actually two zelkova trees, but the other first tree unfortunately withered and was cut down in 1971. Now, only the second tree remains.
During the season, many people flock to enjoy the ``Santaki Cherry Blossoms,'' but this zelkova tree is a surprisingly little-known spot.
It was designated as a prefectural natural monument on August 8, 1940 (S15).
