Sugitani Shrine Sugitanijinja

Sugitani Shrine Main Hall
Sugitani Shrine Main Hall

It is said to have been the guardian deity of the Oe clan, the largest ruling family in Nabari County during the medieval period, and was built as a shrine to enshrine the founder, ``Amanoho Hibi-no-Mikoto'', by Sadamoto Mikawakami, a vassal of Oe, during the Eien era.
Later, during the reign of Emperor Toba, the shrine was given the honorific name ``Sugitani Tenmangu Shrine'' as it was enshrined with the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane.
At first, it was the guardian shrine of the Oe family, but since the Suga-no-Ko ritual, it has become the so-sha of more than 30 villages in Nabari District, and in the 4th year of the Meiji era, the status of the shrine was established and it became a ``go-sha.''
There were two deities enshrined in addition to Amanoho Hichi-no-Mikoto, but in 1901, the shrine was enshrined with the neighboring Mura-sha Shrine and Mukaku-sha Shrine, and since then, the above-mentioned twelve deities have been enshrined up to the present day.
The shrine building was destroyed by fire during the Tensho era, but was rebuilt in 1985 and still stands today, and is designated as a tangible cultural property by Mie Prefecture and NabariCity as a Momoyama-style building.
In addition, the three picture scrolls of Kitano Tenjin Engi, which are treasured, are designated as important works of art and cultural assets of Mie Prefecture.
