This is the ruins of the Kokufu, the political center of ancient Ise Province.
This ruin is located on the river terrace on the north side of the midstream of the Suzuka River, and is known as the Chojayashiki Ruins, and has been known since ancient times as a place where large quantities of ancient roof tiles were excavated.
The first excavation survey was conducted by Kenjiro Fujioka of Kyoto University in 1955, and it was thought to be the ruins of the Kokufu during the Nara period, which also had military functions due to its relationship with Suzuka Seki.
Full-scale excavations have been carried out by SuzukaCity Board of Education since 1992 with support from the national treasury, and many remains of government offices and government offices have been confirmed, indicating that these ruins date from the mid-Nara period to the early Heian period. It was revealed that it was the site of the Ise Kokufu.
It is the ruins of the Kokufu of Ise Province, which was ranked as a major power in ancient times and had jurisdiction over Suzuka Seki, and is an important ruin that allows us to understand the structure of the Kokufu as a whole.
