Meridian Bell Tokinokane
There is a ``Toki no Bell'' in Saiwai-cho, near Hisai General Office. This bell, designated as a cultural property by the city, was built in 1736 (Tenbun 1) as a bell to signal the time in the Hisai Castle area at the time. Even after it was moved to this location in 1789 (Kansei 1), the sound of this bell, which told people the time, was the pride of Hisai for a long time. Now managed by the local residents' association, this bell is run twice a year: on June 10th, ``Toki Anniversary,'' and on New Year's Eve.
Also, near this bell there is a monument with a poem by MatsuoBasho.
This monument, which was erected in 1778, is engraved with a poem by Basho that says, ``The wood on the roadside (original: roadside) is eaten by horses.''
