[From July 8, 2023] “Isao Takahata Exhibition: What we left behind in Japanese animation” will be held at the Mie Prefectural Museum!

A special exhibition featuring Isao Takahata's works, ``Isao Takahata Exhibition: The Legacy of Japanese Animation,'' will be held at the Mie Prefectural Museum (MieMu).

The exhibition focuses on Isao Takahata, a film director with ties to Mie Prefecture who has worked on many animated films for Studio Ghibli and other companies, and focuses on the direction of Isao Takahata, who "doesn't draw", and also introduces many unreleased materials. While doing so, we will explore the secrets of the multifaceted world of his works.

This is a rare opportunity to see more than 1,300 exhibit materials such as storyboards, layouts, background paintings, original drawings, composition draft memos, etc. made available to the public all at once, so please come and visit us♪

Who is Isao Takahata?

Born in 1935 in what is now Ise City IseCity Prefecture, he spent his childhood in TsuCity. Graduated from the Department of French Literature at the University of Tokyo in 1959, and joined what is now Toei Animation in the same year. In 1968, he completed his first full-length production (director), ``The Sun Prince: The Adventures of Horus,'' and went on to direct all episodes of television masterpieces such as ``Heidi, Girl of the Alps.''


In his posthumous work, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013), he used digital technology to create a watercolor-style painting technique that utilized hand-drawn lines, achieving an expressive innovation that was on a completely different level from the traditional cel style. did.


He served as a producer for Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, which was released in 1984, and in 1985 he participated in the establishment of Studio Ghibli, playing an active role alongside Hayao Miyazaki as one of the two pillars of Studio Ghibli.
